About Barbershop

Capital Harmony sings acappella in the Barbershop style. Acappella means "unaccompanied singing". Barbershop is a style that uses four voice parts: the "lead" sings the melody or tune; the "bass" sings the lowest notes; the "tenor" sings the highest notes; and the "baritone" sings whatever is left over - making a four-part chord!

In Barbershop, the aim is to tune the chords so that "overtones" (extra notes) or "ringing" sounds are created. Standard Barbershop uses particular chords and song structures to make this distinctive sound. However, Capital Harmony Chorus also sings four part "do-wop" (where the lead sings a solo part) and "jazz chord" arrangements (where the notes are very close together).
