Musical Director Profile
Joanne Oliver - Musical Director
Jo has been a Sweet Adeline since 1993.
She was a founder member and second director of the Nelson City Chorus. Before becoming director of Capital Harmony (or Wellingtones as it was then known) in 1999, she was section leader and assistant director for Faultline Chorus for four years. She was also director of the Wellington Sound Investment Men's Chorus from 1996-2000.
Joanne received classical voice training from Pamela Sims in Nelson. She has also been a member of the Imperial College Choir (London), the Nelson Civic Choir and the Jack Wentworth Singers.
She has been a member of several quartets, in particular the Applechords, Quattro and her current quartet Phoenix. She regularly judges college quartet competitions at regional and national contests.
Joanne has attended every national contest for both men and women from 1994-2001, singing or directing in all but two of these. She attended the 1995 International contest in New Orleans which was also the Sweet Adelines 50th Anniversary celebration. She has attended most of the directors' training courses held since 1995 and regularly attends the education courses and seminars run by Sweet Adelines in New Zealand.
She works as a consulting engineer and tries to find time for gardening when she isn't rehearsing, planning or performing! It is also true that she enjoys bottling and preserving fruit, and holds a local land speed record for 700cc hatchbacks.
Jo is ably assisted in the task of directing by Mary Sagato - who's our backbeat guru!
